How do I soften the leather that has hardened?

I have an odd problem. My daughter bought a pair of Boston's for our grandson and they didn't fit him. She forgot them in the trunk of her car, and before being able to return them, something in the trunk spilled and soaked the toe of one of the sandals. I'm not sure what the liquid might have been, but the space where the 3 outer toes sit is now hard as a rock, not to mention had been stained by the spill.

She can't return them but was hoping to sell or give them to someone that wears a size 10. To try and cover up the stain, I had some brown stain that I used on a pair of suede western boots which stained them a reddish brown color, which "sort of" did the job.

My question is, does anyone know of a leather softener that I could use to soften the hard spot? I'm not sure what the liquid was, but I'd say oil, which seems would make it softer not harder, antifreeze, or maybe windshield washer fluid. Really, I don't know what it is. The leather will 'bend' and 'move', so my previous description of rock hard may be a little extreme, since the toes of these sandals are pretty firm, anyway. But this is stiffer than the rest.

I'll attempt to put a photo or two on for a clearer picture of what I'm up against. Thank you to any ideas or suggestions as to how to soften up these "hard toed sandals". Lee
